The 10th Field Artillery, organized in 1917 at Douglas, Arizona, soon became part of the 3d Field Artillery Brigade, 3d Division, and was sent to France in World War I where it engaged in five major operations: Champagne, Champagne-Marne, St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne. The 10th won its right to the motto, "The Rock's Support," in the famous stand of the 3d Division on the Marne River. In recognition of its services the regiment-now a battalion-was awarded the Croix de Guerre by Marshal Petain.
