The 39th Field Artillery Battalion was activated at Fort Lewis, Washington, on October 1, 1940, the same post on which its predecessor of World War days was organized. The original 39th Field Artillery, then a regiment, was organized at Camp Lewis in 1918 and was demobilized in 1919. Cadre for the 39th Field Artillery was supplied by the 10th Field Artillery Regiment.
