HEADQUARTERS AND HEADQUARTERS BATTERY

30 INFANTRY DIVISION ARTILLERY

Division Artillery, composed of four battalions-the 9th, 10th, 39th and 41st.---attained a position of greatest respect and admiration with infantry of the 3d Division for its accomplishments during World War II.

Artillery and infantry were an inseparable team. Many an infantryman owes his life to the accurate, rapid answer to his request for fire. Artillery, for example, was credited with the major role in repelling the two great attacks by the Germans against 3d Infantry Division positions on the Anzio Beachhead on February 16-17 and February 29-March 3, 1944.

Artillery forward observers, consisting usually of one officer and three men with a radio, walked in the infantry team and usually were required to be present with the most advanced element of the infantry battalion to which they were attached. Their casualty figures were proportionate to those of rifle platoon leaders.

American artillery in World War II was considered by many experts, both Allied and enemy, the best in the world. The 3d Infantry Division Artillery was second to none.
