Constituted 14th Reconnaissance Squadron (Heavy) on 20 Nov. 1940 they were activated on 15 Jan 1941. Then Redesignated the 404th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy) on 22 Apr. 1942 and inactivated on 5 Jan. 1947. Assigned to, at one point, the 44th Bombardment Group, 28th Composite and the Eleventh Air Force / later Alaskan Air Command. They flew the B-24 in Antisubmarine patrols in the Gulf of Mexico and combat missions in the Aleutian Islands, Bering Sea and Northern Pacific along with Radar mapping of the Aleutian Islands and Alaska. Campaigns include Antisubmarine, American Theater; Air Offensive, Japan; Aleutian Islands; Air Combat, Asiatic-Pacific Theater.
