789th Communications Squadron History

On 1 October 1990, AFCC divested and turned over all operations and maintenance of the communications systems and equipment to the host commands of each base. As a result, the 2045 CG became part of the Military Airlift Command (MAC), reporting directly to the 1776th Air Base Wing (ABW) Commander on Andrews AFB.

However, the 1776th ABW merged with the 89th Military Airlift Wing (MAW) on 12 July 1991, forming the 89th Airlift Wing (AW). AS part of the merger, the 2045 CG was redesignated as the 89 CG, reporting directly to the 89 AW Commander.

On 1 June 1992, MAC was deactivated, and the 89 CG, along with the rest of the 89 AW, became assets of the newly formed Air Mobility Command (AMC). The 89 CG underwent a major rorganization when the entire group was reorganized to form two squadrons, the 89th Communications Squadron and the 789th Communications Squadron (CS), on 1 August 1994.

On 1 October 1995, the MARS station was decommissioned. The 89 CS and 789th CS continue to grow and adjust to the needs of today's communications requirements.
