2d Artillery Regiment

This regiment was organized in February 1862, with ten companies, A to K, which had previously enlisted in State service for one year. The regiment was broken up about May 23, 1862, by operation of the Conscription Act. Companies A, B, D, E, G and H were reorganized and formed the 22nd Bn. Va. Inf. Companies C and F were reorganized and became independent artillery companies. Companies I and K were disbanded and the re-enlisted men were assigned to other companies, principally to Co G and A of the battalion of the infantry.

Co A. Captain Lawson M. Burfood's Co; enlisted January 14, 1862 for one year; reorganized May 23, 1862, subsequently Co A, 22nd Bn. Va. Inf. Captains Lawson M. Burfoot, Thomas E. Burfoot.

Co. B. Charolette and Lunenburg Artillery, Charolette and Lunenburg counties; organized at Keysville; enlisted December 31, 1861, for one year; reorganized May 19, 1862, subsequently Co. B, 22nd Bn. Va. Inf. Captain Armstead W. Baily.

Co. C. Southside Artillery, Chesterfield County, A&IGO roster shows company organized January 7, 1862, and assigned as Co. C; company re-enlisted for war June 3, 1862, as Capt. James B. Jones' Co. Va. Arty, which subsequently became Capt John W. Drewry's Co. Va. Arty. Captains: Augustus Henry Drewry (to Maj. Arty, May 30, 1862). James B. Jones, John W. Drewry.

Co. D. Capt. James T. Alexander's Co; enlisted January 20, 1862 for one year; reorganized May 23, 1862, but A&IGO roster shows May 24, 1862; subsequently became Co. D, 22nd Bn. Va. Inf. Captains: James T. Alexander, William Green Jackson.

Co. E. Capt. Samuel F. McGehee's Co; enlisted January 21, 1862, for one year; reorganized May 23, 1862 (A&IGO roster shows May 24, 1862); subsequently became Co. E, 22nd Bn. Va. Inf.

Co. F. Lunenburg Rebel Artillery, Lunenburg County; enlisted January 23, 1862, for one year; reorganized June 5, 1862; subsequently became Capt. Cornelius Tacitus Allen's Co. Va. Arty. Capt. Samuel W. Hawthorne.

Co. G. Capt. James C. Johnson's Co; enlisted January 31, 1862, for one year; reorganized May 23, 1862; subsequently Co. G, 22nd Bn. Va. Inf. Remarks on Febryary 28, 1862 roll of Co A, 9th Regt Va. Militia show the names of 22 men " transferred to Capt. J. C. Johnson's Co. February 5, 1862." Remarks on rolls of Co. D, 87th Regt. Va. Militia, shows the names of 21 members "transferred by order of Gen. Magruder to J. C. Johnson's Vol. Co. February 5, 1862."

Co. H. Capt. William W. Cosby's Co; enlisted February 4, 1862, for one year, reorganized May 19, 1862, subsequently became Co. H, 22nd Bn. Va. Inf. Captains: William W. Cosby, John S. Bowles.

Co. I. Capt. F. R. Farrar's Co; enlisted February 5, 1862, for one year; evidently broken up by the operation of the Conscription Act in May 1862, and the men who re-enlisted were transferred to other companies, of which 42 are identified as having been transferred to Co. G, 22nd Inf. Bn.

Co. K. Capt. James C. Hanes' Co; enlisted February 7, 1862 for one year, evidently broken up in May 1862 by the operation of the Conscription Act, and members who re-enlisted were transferred to other companies, 39 of which are identified as having been assigned to Co. A, 22nd Bn. Va. Inf.
