The first ship named FORT SNELLING was LSD 23 but this ship's construction was cancelled on August 17, 1946. Decommissioned on September 5, 1984, the FORT SNELLING was stricken from the Navy list on February 24, 1992. On August 25, 1995, the ship was finally sold for scrapping to Peck Recycling, Richmond, Va.
